okay we are we are back uh have you ever gone outside and felt uh disconnected from the environment or like some beautiful tree that you're looking at outside just doesn't fit in with with the world that you live in or have you been uh in a a social environment that just feels off feels inexplicably off maybe you're engaged or enjoying or at least trying to engage something just feels broken there something just feels off you feel uh detached from the setting detached from what's Happening um and detached from the people around you if so have I got a theory for you uh this revolves around um the theory of anesthetization then at the end of this video we're going to talk about the internet how it's a a Timeless spaceless place however it's also uh fundamentally misused and why the internet feels off why all of your social interaction and your your life online just feels uh like un real and broken and uh and uh kind of fake right fundamentally this is all about uh disconnection and uh and uh unreality in some form or another so starting off we have anesthetization right uh what is anesthetization well um this is kind of a a back propagation of an idea um because aesthetic is like a a sense or a feeling of something right some some feeling that you get from an outside thing like literally taken that's not how it's usually used it's not aesthetic is not usually used in like uh to feel or to sense however that's the the literal definition and anesthetization is or anesthetic is without feeling without sense and I really like that dichotomy and I think that that's useful I think that that's a a useful way at analyzing things um so starting out we have we have a thing right just like last time this is a sequel to a previous video doesn't really matter if you haven't seen it you don't really need it um and if you do I'll I'll go over go over it again so starting off we have this uh diffuse or goopy thing it's kind of made out of goop it's not fully realized it exists in some form in in your head or in mind space or um uh like it's not uh actual you you can't go touch it yet it's not um like a fully fleshed out thing um but let's say it becomes a thing right now you have a a real thing in the world we can use a tree as an example if you want a concrete thing um and then this this right here that's a a brain with eyeballs sticking out of it that's your sense perception that's your your um the way that you interact with the world and see the world around you um and what do your eyeballs do they see and then they go to the brain and what does the brain do it gets the sense of a thing it gets uh the underlying um underlying senses of the thing it gets the the properties of the thing it's the essential oil of the thing you extract whatever it is from the the thing itself and now you have like a um kind of like an abstraction of the thing right you have the fundamental elements of the thing and that's the aesthetic that's the aesthetic of the thing this thing um this thing up here has now been abstra abstracted by your uh sensory organs into just the sense into the aesthetic but importantly you never have just one sense with you right you always have a a multitude of Senses there's always multiple things happening um and if you were to go through life like this looking at every single thing and always trying to get the underlying principles of the thing that's super taxing that's super um uh intensive on your on your brain and your life and trying to make sense the world that's just noise at that point you're you're taking in so much you're processing it all at once it's just noise so what do you do when you have multiple similar Aesthetics you abstract it out into a framework I'm calling it a frame here can be called a frame can be called a world map a world viiew an ideology uh what is this it is a way that you make sense of the world that you understand some of the uh underlying principles so you don't have to constantly analyze everything and try to make sense of it really you build these frames kind of everywhere throughout your life whether it be socially or politically or ideologically or morally uh it just helps you make sense of the world right um and in this case this Frame is made up of senses and it's used to analyze different senses so it really simplifies the things and sense relationship you have a thing inside of the frame and then the frame is the the outer barrier right and um when you have something in there you you can see the frame principally you can see the frame is kind of the first first thing that you look at and then you don't have to really go and take a closer look at that thing anymore you kind of understand like okay I can can uh understand this in a a more General context and if you were analyzing multiple natural products if you were to take a a mushroom and a tree and uh put those together into trying to create a frame you would end up with something like nature or or kind of an abstract flowing of things together in a a connected manner right another common literal literal frame that we interact with on a day-to-day basis is just the the kind of top down more rigid structure of how Society runs right so you go outside you might see a car drive by and then a of tall buildings bunch of just Square gray buildings and then some like center for the Sciences or something like that and once you abstract that out abstract the senses out and put it back together into a frame that kind of becomes a a rigid structured orderly Society um that you now know you're operating within right and this doesn't happen every time you go outside right you just you have to do this only a couple of times in your life before you have a an understanding of the the structure of society the the frame of society that you're interacting with in right however let's now take this frame and put a tree inside of it right this no longer really works right you have this tree with one sense which is kind of a a connected uh flowing natural uh setting of of kind of Outdoors uh connectedness no rigid structure and then you have this Frame and the sense of this Frame the the the senses that you've used to construct this Frame are rigid and uh top down and uh linear and uh objective right so these there's a fundamental mismatch here so when you go and look at this tree when you go outside and see a beautiful fall tree when the leaves are turning red and orange and yellow and it uh is just a a beautiful product um and you're just focused on it just uh investigating the beauty of this tree uh and then like a bunch of cars drive past and you realize it's in front of a uh like public bathroom or something like that in front of a McDonald's um there's a Starbucks next door there's like loud music playing around you you this feels wrong right this is not you're getting one sense from the tree and you're trying to analyze that sense you're trying to understand the the beauty intrinsic to this tree and it makes much more sense when you're looking at a tree in a natural setting right but that's not where you are you're in an urban environment uh surrounded by the the senses of the frame not the senses of the tree and this is what I call an anesthetic relationship this tree uh you no longer have full access to the senses or feelings of this tree the senses that should be intrinsic to this tree that you should be analyzing this tree with the senses that that you are picking up on and then immediately going oh this is not uh the context this is not the right context I I'm uh there's a mismatch between the the context and the thing that I'm interested in right that's anesthetic that's removed from the senses removed from the feeling um that's that's no longer the the truth of the thing if you want to use truth I I'm not going to go into that that gets pretty messy pretty quickly in my view like an example that I used previously is going to a school that I feel like atomized in and like no one's really uh focused on the work and everything's just kind of uh being run the wrong way I don't really enjoy being around all of the people and then one day they throw a pep rally I try to engage with this I try to go to this pep rally and uh like pay attention to the games that they're playing and uh the music that's playing and the the cheering that's going on but that's just not that's not happening there's a a mismatch there's an un alignment there that in one sense you are in a a crowd of people cheering and expressing their their joy and positivity towards the environment around them and in the frame you have this this rigid top down structure that is mismanaged and nobody actually likes each other in this environment there's a a mismatch between the people inside of the environment the uh the the object that you're analyzing through the frame and the frame itself what the frame represents the senses of the frame um and with that that kind of covers uh the process of anesthetization in my view it's water time it's water time drink your water I should say I'm I'm not wearing this hule shirt in a a tech bro way I'm I'm wearing it in a uh I can't eat a a full meal at lunch because I'm not hungry enough way it's a a meal replacement shake I'm not a huligan I'm not a huligan I swear briefly covering the process of digitization again um we will uh kind of race through this go watch my previous video if you want more information on this um we'll we'll start with the real thing I call that tactual it's fully available to the senses the environment around it can manipulate it and it can manipulate the environment around it the process of digitization occurs when this thing is put into a container and it no longer has reference to it being part of the environment it only has reference to itself it m maintains internal reference however it cannot uh interact with the environment it's not mutable at this point it can't change uh it it has a firm boundary whereas the real thing does not have a firm boundary right whereas a a reference once you have a Digi once you have a digitized thing you can still access it through reference but this is uh you you lose any semblance of process that you have uh this is it's now just making a reference to it being a thing in and of itself the container has partially merged with it as a a an aspect of the the thing um and the senses are far less accessible or uh potentially just completely inaccessible at this point I've realized in my last video the examples I gave were not outstanding so I'm going to give one more that I gave in a a comment reply yesterday um or whenever this comes out um and that's an example of a a Buzz Lightyear toy that I saw a a reference or saw a review for online um and this toy was a fully robotic animatronic action figure that was marketed as a toy it was like 500 bucks or something um it's like okay it's cool as an art piece right but like as a toy it really loses reference to what a toy ought to be right and I'm using scare quotes there because that's a what what a toy ought to be is is um a difficult thing to Define right I'm not sure I fully subscribe to that view but um anyway taking the the tactual version of this I would say is like a the the Buzz Lightyear toy that I had in my childhood where um it's a a medium for imaginative imaginative play for children and they can move around the limbs and articulate it and uh like toss it across the room if they want to and really there's no limits to how that thing is used it's just a uh an object that can be interacted with and can uh provide some feeling uh towards the for the person interacting with it right however this thing this robotic uh Buzz Lightyear toy is now fully digitized it's in a the container that's that it's in is a an animatronic one it's a it's no longer an action figure or a toy it's now a an art piece or a robot which I find um kind of like intuitively viscerally slightly disturbing like that feels wrong there's something wrong about doing that moving now to the internet um we will we will start with a a thing this video right now not for you but right now is a a real thing I am in the middle of filming this this is a completely process filled this is process Rich for me someone could walk in this room right now and to change the trajectory of the video or someone could call me like any number of things could happen I am in the environment as much as the environment is around me right my phone could die um and this video could never be uh filmed right this could never be published however uh hoping that that doesn't occur you are watching this in a a digital frame right you're watching this on YouTube it's been uploaded it's been digitized youtube.com is the the the digital container that this video is in it's frozen in time it's it can be like broken um or left alone but it can't be directly influenced anymore right however youtube.com is not the frame right this youtube.com is the the container for the digitized thing the digit digitized thing being the the video that you're watching right however it also exists in a frame and what is that frame that frame is the internet you uh have some associations you have some sense of what the internet is what the internet represents uh what the form of the internet takes um and I think that there's a disconnect between youtube.com and the digitized video that you're watching and uh the sense of what the internet represents in our Collective Consciousness right this can most easily be seen I think by uh looking at what terms we use to talk about the internet right um first of all internet net right we call it the web um networking these are all terms that we use for a like node-based connective process where everything is is kind of lateral to each other it's not really top down um things can link directly to other things we have hyperlinks as one of the like kind of foundational building blocks of the internet we have a a kind of Limitless access to anything according to the frame of what the internet what the internet's promise is right even more it's not just interconnected right it's not just node based linking to different nodes right it is actively boundary dissolving we have this promise of being able to access Limitless information across the web uh sending articles to people halfway across the world um and and really breaking down all of these institutional barriers that were um up due to space and time before the internet was created and that's really interesting because the the sense of the frame of the internet is uh is really boundary dissolving uh Timeless spaceless almost formless however that's not how anything online actually presents itself and I find that fascinating looking now at the senses that come along with a digital asset like this video uh it is frozen it is bounded it is contained in some capacity uh it is like immutable it cannot be changed over time it's up uploaded in in a certain State and either broken or or um static but not changed it's not like ever changing it's not becoming it's not processual um it it just is what it is it's self-referential it's self-contained it only has access to itself um and there are exceptions to this right there are a couple or at least areas where this gets a little more fuzzy right like uh Twitch streaming I think is one where um the audience has access to the video or to the video stream and can influence it in some capacity and the the streamer can impact the Audience by what they present on stream right and that's interesting however there is still a disconnect it's still removed from senses and some capacity I believe that the main distinction between an actual tactual reality uh of inter relation between people and a twitch stream is the top down control the uh streamer has control over the audience the streamer can ban individuals the individuals are effectively Anonymous to the streamer so there is no like direct uh sense connection between them um and even if there is even if they know each other in real life that's not transmitted through the internet that's uh some outside information that's being uh taken and being processed by both the streamer and the commenter right and this still con conflicts with our promise what of what the internet is of a a lateral system of connection rather than a a top- down control Network right and that's the that's the real distinction between like in-person communication and uh Twitch streaming this is really in a category of what I call the appearance of socializing and these are these are categories of ways in which the internet is kind of an anesthetic medium right no no the Lights Went Out the lights are uh not coming back on okay they're back on the lights are back the lights are back let's go where was I um let's see Twitch streaming is an example of the appearance of socializing and uh that's a a category along with a couple of others of how the internet is an anesthetic medium right how it's uh misused and uh and why things online often feel off in some capacity another example of this would be uh Zoom specifically Zoom School my experience with zoom School outstanding loved Zoom School compared to normal school why is that because it's not actual school it's not socializing you can't talk to the person next to you you can't have side conversation it's top down control of the teacher being able to mute anyone okay I'm editing this video I realized that I could have described the appearance of socializing better uh I don't think that it has to do with the structure of the system like it being a a webbased uh structure versus a a tree based kind of top down structure I think it has more to do with how the boundaries are uh the boundaries are held up for example when you're uh in an actual like in-person conversation you are uh deeply intertwined with the other person and the setting that you guys share right how ever if you're on Twitch or in Zoom school you have the boundary of whatever you're presenting to the outside world and all of those factors can be tightly controlled by you so you you are uh imposing very strict boundaries which goes against the idea of this boundless Timeless spaceless setting that the internet promises to be so taking fake Community as another example of a category I think that this is a a more solid one than the appearance of socializing I think in this way there's a a very obvious promise of what it could be and then the actual um reality of what it is taking uh like social media some kind of a like less in real life social media like Reddit or Twitter or Discord or something like that where you don't necessarily know the people in real life on the other end you have the promise of uh like socializing and friendship where it's a a direct like linear uh personto person communication you have full access to the the sense perception of both people and can kind of uh interact because of that right and you have the the promise of the internet which supposedly aligns with that of a uh like direct connection to the other person um and really a personal connection on that end kind of a boundless connection boundaryless connection I should say um however this is not how it pans out because the digital asset that uh you are using to communicate the uh messages that you send to one another the posts that you post online they are not uh like real they are are static they are uh self-referential they might have they might make reference to other things but they're not involved in the process of other things they are uh detached from any any reality of the inner inner workings of the things that they're referencing uh so it's it's very fake it's very plastic feeling um I should use a different word than plastic because plastic denotes um like flexibility and change whereas this is very uh static this is contained this is frozen This is highly bounded this is immutable and that's the the assets that you're using to communicate with one another and this feels wrong this creates a a a perception of like feeling off feeling like this is not how people were made to work this is uh something is is broken about this way of talking to one another finally we have zombification which is potentially the most obvious example of how uh digital assets are are anesthetized in this way we online are capable are incapable of letting things die right we uh have have reference to things and uh keep it in stasis until it becomes later or useful later on right a a a solid example of this is uh like a post that someone's posted like 12 years ago online and you find when you have an issue with with your code or something like that you respond to it to try to get the person to uh answer what how they solved it right you're Reviving a dead thing however that thing has never died originally it's just in a a frozen form of stasis until someone else comes along to to uh repurpose it repurpose the dead corpse of this thing the half dead corpse of this thing even worse um and again this is not the the immediate interconnection that the internet promises this is the the uh digital Frozen asset um this is the this is the direct result of what you get when everything is digitized online another example of this is like pulling up people's old tweets and uh like cancelling them for that what wherever you you fall on that issue um but this again is is someone has put something out into the world out into the The Ether and uh it's being revived years later to uh repurpose recontextualize and uh hold it against that person right we cannot let things die uh they the person who posted this was probably thinking that the internet is a uh like place where you are supposed to uh put something up and then other people have direct access to it immediately it's uh interconnected in that way it's boundaryless um however the Deep Freeze of digitization prevents this from going away this exists forever now this is a digital asset this has been uploaded and uh held with internal context uh contained but external context uh entirely removed it's almost a a reference of digitized thing when you're pulling it up and uh reusing it in a different context when you're re contextualizing it right even when things try to die online we have services to make sure that they don't services like the way back machine make sure that things can never fully die out they are at most ever a a walking Undead corpse of its own thing uh it is preserved it is um uh dipped in a bucket of fald hiide and the the jar is sealed the bucket is sealed it uh sits there now as a a kind of reference to the original thing that has now been held in stasis right and I think that these are all indicative of why the internet feels so off sometimes while you feel like the internet should have gone one way but it feels like a broken Frozen unchanging uh immutable uh highly bounded topdown version of the idealized form of the internet that we have all at once imagined that it could have you even see this with like web 3 crypto Bros that come along and say we need a new internet we need to change this we need to create new technologies that allow the internet to change and I think that that is um I I don't think that they're going to do that I don't think that web 3 Crypt grows are going to change the internet with blockchain technology but there's still that hope that the internet can become what we what we what it was promised we all know that fake community and zoom School are broken systems but we have never been able to really say why and I think it comes down to the the digitization of everything that's online and the anesthetization the uh difference between the the internal sense of the digital thing and the uh external sense of the promise of the internet so with that what do you do um I don't know like go outside I guess or something um I don't do call to actions uh I I don't do that uh make of this what you will uh correct my argument where it's wrong uh and uh reinterpret it wildly if you'd like to I got some really solid comments on my last video of uh interpretations that I had not uh intended and I I love to see that I uh my videos are scattershot and uh very lateral uh and very jumpy for for two reasons one because I don't script my videos I I don't think I ever will I really love just rambling Off Script um but also too I think that there's um I think that it's great when ideas are repurposed and reinterpreted and made into something that they were originally not and people are hesitant to do that when it's like old philosophy ideas um because there's some like intrinsic correct argument that the the author was putting forth right if you're reading K you're not gonna like go through and reimagine everything within K unless you have some like letters after your name and and think that you're capable of of really doing that but I think there's a lot lost in that so I I hope that uh a 19-year-old putting out videos on YouTube is uh less intimidating than con so you can just take the good aspect and completely throw away the bad aspect and apply it to something completely different I I really love when ideas uh change CH wildly I love the game of telephone that happens with ideas and I think that that's uh what's valuable about ideas they are are you abstract them you take uh the essential oil from them and in that state they are completely mutable they are boundaryless and changeable and uh can be related to anything else that's in your head to anything else that's in the real world and applied in any way you choose so please go out and do that because I I love seeing it let me know if you uh come up with anything good or have any um alternate interpretations of anything that I said because I I think that that's super valuable personally just as an exploration of idea space which is uh really what my Channel's all about so yeah with that uh thank you for watching um cool Back To Top
